The Kochi Municipal Corporation has started extensive pre-monsoon cleaning drives across Kochi to reduce the risk of waterlogging and flooding during the upcoming rainy season. The initiative focuses on clearing drains, canals, and removing accumulated waste from key areas of the city.

Municipal officials said the cleaning activities are being carried out in several wards where waterlogging has been reported in previous monsoon seasons. Workers have been deployed to remove silt, plastic waste, and other debris from stormwater drains and canals to ensure smooth water flow during heavy rainfall.

The civic body is also coordinating with sanitation teams and local contractors to speed up the cleaning process. Special attention is being given to major canals and drainage channels that carry rainwater from residential and commercial areas to nearby water bodies.

Authorities explained that blocked drains and improper waste disposal are among the main causes of flooding during the monsoon. By clearing these drainage systems in advance, the corporation aims to minimize flooding on roads and in residential neighborhoods.

Residents have been requested to cooperate with the initiative by avoiding the dumping of waste into drains and canals. The corporation has also urged local communities and business establishments to support the effort by maintaining cleanliness around their premises.

Officials stated that the pre-monsoon drive will continue in phases across the city in the coming weeks. The initiative is expected to strengthen the city’s drainage system and help ensure smoother water flow during the rainy season, reducing the chances of severe waterlogging in Kochi.
