Thiruvananthapuram, July 24: Kerala University has withdrawn its proposal to establish a ₹2-crore sculpture park at its Kariavattom campus following widespread criticism from students, teachers, and sections of the academic community over the project’s spending priorities. The decision was taken after concerns were raised that the funds could be more effectively utilised to improve academic infrastructure and student facilities.
The proposed sculpture park was intended to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the university campus and serve as a cultural landmark showcasing art and heritage. However, the announcement drew criticism from various student organisations, faculty members, and education activists, who questioned the timing of the project amid demands for better classrooms, laboratories, hostels, libraries, and research facilities.
Critics argued that the university should prioritise investments that directly benefit students and strengthen academic standards rather than allocating substantial funds to non-essential infrastructure. Several organisations also pointed to the need for modernising campus facilities and addressing long-pending maintenance works before undertaking large-scale beautification projects.
Following the public response, university authorities reviewed the proposal and decided to withdraw the project. Officials stated that the decision was taken after considering the views expressed by stakeholders and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring that available resources are utilised responsibly and in accordance with institutional priorities.
The move has been welcomed by several student unions and faculty associations, who described it as a positive step reflecting the importance of public consultation in major spending decisions. Many have urged the university to redirect the proposed ₹2 crore towards improving academic infrastructure, expanding research facilities, upgrading hostels, and strengthening student support services.
