The Kerala football team put on a commanding display in the semi-final of the 79th Santosh Trophy, dominating their clash against Punjab at the Dhakuakhana Football Stadium in Assam on Thursday. Kerala raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time, showcasing clinical attacking play and strong organisation at the back to control proceedings against their opponents.

Kerala opened the scoring early when Muhammad Ajsal rose above the defence to head in from a well-delivered corner in the 15th minute, giving his team the early advantage. The momentum stayed firmly with Kerala as they continued to pressure the Punjab defence, combining swift passing with aggressive forward runs. In the 33rd minute, Muhammed Riyas P T doubled the lead with a composed finish inside the box after sustained pressure.

Just before the interval, Viknesh M added a third goal with a remarkable curled effort into the far corner, leaving the Punjab goalkeeper with no chance. By the break, Kerala had effectively put the match beyond Punjab’s reach, denying them significant possession and limiting their goal-threat opportunities. The Kerala goalkeeper, Hajmal S, remained largely untroubled due to the team’s defensive discipline and control over the midfield.

The result sees Kerala on the verge of reaching the Santosh Trophy final, where they will face Services, who won the other semi-final. Last season’s runners-up, Kerala have been among the standout teams in this year’s competition, having also stormed into the semifinals with a convincing 3-0 quarter-final victory over Assam earlier in the tournament.

Kerala’s attacking efficiency and tactical solidity in this semi-final underline their strong title ambitions, as they look to go one step further and secure the coveted Santosh Trophy crown.
