The Government of Kerala has intensified efforts to strengthen waste management systems across the state. Local self-government institutions, including municipalities and panchayats, have launched new campaigns aimed at improving waste segregation, recycling, and scientific disposal of garbage.
As part of the initiative, local bodies are encouraging households and commercial establishments to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste at the source. Officials from the Local Self Government Department Kerala have emphasized that proper segregation is essential for efficient waste processing and reducing the burden on landfill sites.
Several municipalities have started awareness drives to educate residents about responsible waste management practices. Community volunteers, health workers, and local officials are visiting households to explain how to properly separate organic waste, plastic waste, and other recyclable materials. Public campaigns are also being conducted through schools, resident associations, and local community groups.
The initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Haritha Karma Sena, a network of women workers involved in collecting and managing household waste in many parts of Kerala. Members of the group collect segregated waste from households and transport recyclable materials to designated processing units.
Authorities have also introduced new measures to improve recycling infrastructure. Material collection facilities and composting centers are being expanded to handle increasing volumes of waste. Organic waste is being converted into compost or biogas, while plastic and other recyclable materials are sent to recycling units.
Officials stated that strengthening waste management has become a priority due to rising urban population and increasing waste generation. Proper waste segregation and recycling are expected to reduce environmental pollution and improve sanitation in towns and cities across Kerala.
The government hopes that active participation from residents, businesses, and local communities will play a crucial role in making these waste management initiatives successful and ensuring cleaner, healthier urban environments.
