The Kerala High Court has set aside the life sentence imposed on an accused in a 2015 murder case from Kochi, citing insufficient evidence and lapses in the prosecution’s case. The judgment was delivered after a detailed examination of witness testimonies, forensic evidence, and the sequence of events presented during the trial.

The case related to the death of a woman whose body was found in her residence in Kochi over a decade ago. A trial court had earlier convicted the accused based largely on circumstantial evidence and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The accused challenged the verdict, arguing that the evidence did not conclusively establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

In its ruling, the High Court observed that key prosecution witnesses had provided contradictory statements and that there were significant gaps in the chain of circumstances. The court also noted the absence of a clearly established motive and inconsistencies in forensic findings.

Legal experts said the judgment highlights the importance of rigorous investigation and credible evidence in criminal cases. The court reiterated that suspicion, however strong, cannot replace proof and emphasized adherence to due process.

The accused is expected to be released following completion of procedural formalities unless detained in connection with any other case. The verdict has drawn mixed reactions, with legal circles viewing it as a reinforcement of judicial safeguards, while family members of the deceased expressed disappointment.
