The Kerala High Court has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to prepare a vetted panel of qualified employees for appointment as assistants at the Sabarimala temple. The order aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to established norms in the appointment process.
The court’s directive came while hearing petitions that raised concerns over irregularities and lack of clear criteria in previous appointments. Petitioners argued that appointments should be made strictly based on eligibility, experience, and seniority, without arbitrary decision-making.
In its order, the court emphasised that religious institutions managed by statutory boards must follow principles of natural justice and administrative accountability. The TDB was instructed to verify credentials thoroughly and create a merit-based panel before making any new appointments.
Legal experts noted that the ruling reinforces judicial oversight over temple administration, especially in matters involving employment and governance. The decision is expected to bring greater clarity and consistency to future recruitment processes at Sabarimala.
The Travancore Devaswom Board has stated that it will comply with the court’s instructions and begin the vetting process at the earliest. Officials indicated that internal guidelines would be reviewed to align with the ruling.
Devotee groups have welcomed the order, expressing hope that it will enhance the integrity of temple administration. The judgment is likely to serve as a precedent for similar cases involving appointments in temple institutions across the state.
