The Government of Kerala has reviewed the ongoing LPG supply situation in the state following complaints of shortages that have affected restaurants and other commercial establishments. The review meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, with senior officials from the Civil Supplies Department and representatives of oil marketing companies participating in the discussion.
According to officials, several hotels, restaurants, catering units, and hostels across the state have reported difficulty in obtaining non-domestic LPG cylinders, which are mainly used for commercial cooking purposes. The shortage has raised concerns among business owners, especially in the hospitality sector, as many establishments depend heavily on LPG for daily operations. Restaurant associations have warned that prolonged supply disruptions could affect food services and increase operational costs.
During the meeting, the state government reviewed the current supply chain and distribution system for LPG cylinders in Kerala. Officials explained that the shortage is mainly related to limited allocation of commercial LPG cylinders and increasing demand from hotels, bakeries, and other food-related businesses.
To address the issue, the government has decided to request the central authorities to increase the allocation of non-domestic LPG cylinders for Kerala. Authorities also discussed improving coordination with oil companies to ensure faster delivery and smoother distribution across districts.
In addition, the government is considering measures to prevent the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes, which can worsen supply shortages. The Civil Supplies Department has been directed to monitor the distribution system more closely and take action against illegal diversion or hoarding of LPG cylinders.
Officials stated that priority will be given to essential institutions such as hospitals, community kitchens, and other public service facilities to ensure uninterrupted cooking gas supply.
The state government has assured that necessary steps will be taken to stabilize LPG availability and reduce difficulties faced by businesses and consumers across Kerala.
