The Kerala government has announced plans to establish 28 Automated Vehicle Testing Stations (AVTS) across the state as part of a major initiative to modernize vehicle fitness inspections, improve road safety, and enhance transparency in the transport sector. The project is expected to transform the way vehicle fitness certification is conducted by replacing many manual inspection processes with advanced automated testing systems.
According to officials from the Transport Department, the proposed stations will use modern technology to assess vehicle roadworthiness through computerized and sensor-based inspections. These facilities will evaluate critical safety parameters such as braking efficiency, suspension performance, steering systems, wheel alignment, lighting, emissions, and overall mechanical condition.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring that vehicles operating on Kerala’s roads meet prescribed safety standards while reducing the possibility of human error and irregularities during fitness certification. Authorities believe that automated testing will help identify unsafe vehicles more accurately and contribute to a reduction in road accidents caused by mechanical defects.
The project is being implemented in line with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which has been encouraging states to adopt automated testing systems for commercial and transport vehicles. The new stations are expected to serve both private and commercial vehicles, depending on operational requirements and regulatory approvals.
Transport officials stated that the facilities will significantly improve efficiency by reducing waiting times and providing standardized inspection procedures across the state. Digital records generated during the testing process will enhance transparency and make it easier for authorities to monitor vehicle compliance.
Road safety experts have welcomed the move, noting that automated inspections can help ensure stricter enforcement of fitness standards and remove subjectivity from vehicle testing. They also emphasized that better vehicle maintenance and timely detection of mechanical issues can play a crucial role in preventing accidents and improving overall road safety.
The government expects the network of 28 Automated Vehicle Testing Stations to be established in phases across various districts, ensuring accessibility for vehicle owners throughout Kerala. Once operational, the stations are expected to become a key component of the state’s road safety and transport modernization strategy.
Officials believe the initiative will create a more reliable, transparent, and technology-driven vehicle inspection system, benefiting motorists, transport operators, enforcement agencies, and the general public while contributing to safer roads across Kerala.
