The Government of Kerala has initiated measures to strengthen disaster preparedness systems across the state as it prepares for the upcoming monsoon season. The focus is on minimizing the impact of heavy rains, floods, and landslides in vulnerable districts.
Authorities have directed the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority to enhance early warning systems and improve coordination between district administrations and emergency response teams. Special attention is being given to districts such as Wayanad, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta, which are prone to landslides and flooding during intense rainfall.
As part of the preparedness plan, authorities are conducting inspections of dams, rivers, and drainage systems to ensure they can handle increased water flow. Emergency shelters are being identified and prepared to accommodate people in case evacuations become necessary.
The government is also strengthening communication systems to provide timely weather alerts and safety instructions to the public. Local bodies have been instructed to clear drains, remove obstructions from waterways, and carry out pre-monsoon sanitation drives to prevent waterlogging.
Rescue teams, including fire and rescue services, police, and volunteer groups, are being placed on high alert. Equipment such as boats, life jackets, and emergency supplies are being arranged to respond quickly to any situation.
Officials emphasized the importance of community participation in disaster preparedness. Residents in high-risk areas have been advised to stay informed about weather updates and follow official guidelines to ensure their safety.
These proactive measures aim to reduce potential damage, protect lives, and improve the state’s overall response capacity during the monsoon season.
