The Kerala government has recently announced several development initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism and improving infrastructure across the state. These projects are part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance Kerala’s reputation as a leading travel destination in India.
In the latest state budget, the government increased funding for the tourism sector, allocating over ₹413 crore to support new tourism circuits, destination development, marketing campaigns, and infrastructure upgrades. Authorities say the increased investment will help modernize tourism facilities and attract more domestic and international visitors.
One of the major initiatives is the Blue-Green Integrated Tourism Circuit, designed to promote eco-friendly tourism by linking rivers, islands, and heritage locations. The first phase of the project will be implemented in Dharmadom in Kannur district, where plans include a river cruise circuit, a mangrove information centre, and a walking museum to showcase the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
In addition to tourism circuits, several local infrastructure projects are also being developed. For example, in Kochi, the Kadambrayar eco-tourism project is being revived with a budget of about ₹4.5 crore. The plan includes a 1.2-kilometre elevated walkway, boating and kayaking facilities, landscaping, and improved lighting, which are expected to attract visitors and support local businesses.
The government is also investing in transport and connectivity improvements. Major initiatives include the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, which will significantly reduce travel time across the state and improve access to tourist destinations.
Officials say these projects will promote sustainable tourism while improving infrastructure such as waterways, roads, and public facilities. By combining environmental conservation with modern infrastructure development, Kerala aims to strengthen its position as one of India’s most attractive and sustainable tourism destinations.
