Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today officially inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Microbiome (CoEM) — the first institution of its kind in India dedicated to cutting-edge microbiome research and its translation into real-world applications. The dedication ceremony, held at the facility in KINFRA Park, Kazhakkoottam, marked a key milestone in the state’s push to harness microbial science for health, agriculture, environment and industry.
Designed under the motto “Microbes for Life,” the CoEM brings together multidisciplinary research on microbial communities that live on and around us — from the human body to soil and water ecosystems. It operates under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) with collaboration from the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) and scientific guidance from the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology.
The new centre is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, including molecular biology and microbiology units, animal cell culture facilities, bioinformatics infrastructure for big data analytics, incubation and startup support spaces, and training halls. Researchers at CoEM will focus on translating microbiome insights into products and solutions for human health, nutritional enhancement, disease prevention, agriculture productivity, fisheries sustainability and environmental conservation.
In a parallel announcement at the event, the Chief Minister declared Kerala’s first “state microbe” — an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the beneficial roles played by microbes in everyday life, from supporting immunity to enhancing soil fertility. This move highlights the government’s effort to shift public perception beyond associating microbes only with disease.
Experts say the field of microbiome science offers huge potential for innovation. By establishing a central platform that integrates research, training and industry collaboration, Kerala aims not only to contribute to global scientific knowledge but also to foster startups and generate socioeconomic benefits rooted in microbial technologies.
The event drew scientists, policymakers, and industry partners, underscoring a shared commitment to advancing microbiome research as a cornerstone of future science and sustainability.
