The Kerala government has rolled out a set of updated heatwave preparedness measures as rising daytime temperatures and prolonged dry conditions continue across several districts. With mercury levels climbing above seasonal averages in interior regions and humidity compounding discomfort along the coast, authorities have moved to strengthen preventive and emergency response systems statewide.
The State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), in coordination with the Health Department and local self-governments, has issued district-level advisories urging residents to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Schools have been asked to reschedule outdoor activities, while labour departments have advised employers to adjust working hours for outdoor workers, particularly in construction, agriculture and roadwork sectors.
Primary health centres and government hospitals have been instructed to remain alert for heat-related illnesses, including dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Medical officers have been directed to maintain adequate stocks of oral rehydration salts (ORS), intravenous fluids and essential emergency medicines. Awareness campaigns through local bodies, community health workers and media platforms are being intensified to educate the public about early warning signs and first-aid measures.
Authorities have also emphasised the importance of hydration, light cotton clothing, and regular rest breaks during outdoor activity. Vulnerable groups — including elderly citizens, children, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses — have been advised to remain indoors during peak heat hours whenever possible.
Local administrations have been asked to ensure the availability of public drinking water facilities at bus stands, markets and other high-footfall areas. Monitoring teams are tracking weather forecasts daily, and contingency plans are in place should temperatures escalate further.
Officials noted that while scattered pre-monsoon showers may bring temporary relief in some regions, continued vigilance is necessary as climate variability increases the likelihood of intense and prolonged heat episodes in the state.
