In a significant relief measure, the Karnataka government has launched a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for water bill defaulters in Bengaluru. The initiative aims to help residents clear pending dues while easing financial pressure during the summer season.
Under the scheme, consumers can pay only the principal amount of their outstanding bills, with the entire interest component being waived. The offer is valid from April to June 2026 and applies to domestic, commercial, and industrial users.
Officials estimate that around 5.1 lakh consumers out of the city’s 11 lakh water connections have pending dues, amounting to over ₹850 crore. By introducing this scheme, the government hopes to recover a substantial portion of the principal amount while providing relief to citizens.
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will notify eligible consumers with details of their dues. Payments can be made through online portals, kiosks, or digital payment systems, making the process convenient and accessible.
This move comes at a time when water demand in Bengaluru is rising due to increasing temperatures and urban expansion. By clearing dues, the government also aims to strengthen the financial position of BWSSB, enabling better water supply management.
Experts believe that such schemes can improve compliance and reduce long-term defaults. However, they also stress the importance of sustainable water management practices, including conservation and efficient distribution systems.
The scheme is expected to benefit thousands of households and businesses, offering them a fresh start while supporting the city’s water infrastructure.
