Bengaluru: In a move aimed at strengthening the technology ecosystem in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has announced plans to establish a major AI and Robotics Innovation Zone in collaboration with leading research institutions.

The initiative was revealed during the presentation of the state budget by Siddaramaiah. The proposed project will be developed in partnership with the Indian Institute of Science, the Indian Space Research Organisation, and the state electronics development agency KEONICS.

The innovation zone will focus on research and development in artificial intelligence, robotics, and emerging technologies. Officials say the project is intended to position Bengaluru as a global hub for advanced technological research and innovation.

The state government has also announced plans to establish a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence to support research, skill development, and startup incubation in the field. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand Karnataka’s technology sector and attract more global capability centres.

Currently, Karnataka hosts more than 550 global capability centres (GCCs), making it one of the leading technology hubs in Asia. The government aims to establish 500 additional GCCs by 2029, which could create around 3.5 lakh jobs and generate significant economic output.

Industry experts say the new innovation zone could accelerate research collaborations between universities, startups, and technology companies. They believe the initiative will further strengthen Bengaluru’s reputation as India’s leading centre for technology and innovation.
