In a major relief measure, the Karnataka government has introduced a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme for water bill defaulters in Bengaluru. The initiative aims to help residents clear pending dues while easing financial pressure ahead of the summer season.
Under the scheme, consumers can pay only the principal amount of their water bills, while the interest on overdue payments will be completely waived. The offer will be valid for three months, from April to June 2026.
Officials revealed that out of approximately 11 lakh water connections in the city, over 5.1 lakh accounts currently have pending dues. The total outstanding amount stands at around ₹851 crore, including both principal and interest.
The scheme applies to all categories of users, including domestic households, commercial establishments, and industrial units. Authorities believe that this move will not only benefit citizens but also improve the financial health of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).
With summer approaching, water demand in Bengaluru is expected to rise significantly. Ensuring timely payments and better revenue collection will help authorities maintain supply and invest in infrastructure improvements.
Residents will be notified about their dues and can make payments through multiple channels, including online portals and designated kiosks.
Experts say such schemes are a practical solution to recover long-pending dues while supporting citizens during financially challenging periods. However, they also stress the importance of long-term measures to prevent accumulation of unpaid bills in the future.
The success of this initiative will depend on public participation and efficient implementation by authorities.
