JERUSALEM — The Israeli government’s recent decisions to deepen its control over land in the occupied West Bank have sparked intense international debate, with critics warning the moves edge toward de-facto annexation of territory Palestinians seek for a future state. In mid-February, Israel’s cabinet approved land registration measures that would tighten state authority and make it easier for settlers to acquire property in the West Bank — the first such steps since 1967 — drawing condemnation from Palestinian leaders and global bodies including the United Nations.

Palestinian officials and rights groups denounced the policy as a “grave escalation” that could lead to the dispossession of Palestinian landowners and undermine the viability of a two-state solution. U.N. experts said the changes risk entrenching control over the territory and violating international law. More than 80 U.N. member states signed a joint statement condemning the moves as unlawful and destabilizing for regional peace efforts.

Arab and Islamic nations likewise criticized the plan, calling it a serious escalation that accelerates settlement activity and further marginalizes Palestinian claims. The debate has intensified diplomatic tensions as Israel faces pressure to reverse course amid mounting global calls for respect for international norms.
