Cyclone Ditwah unleashed torrential rains, floods and landslides across Sri Lanka, leaving dozens dead and many more displaced. In response, Government of India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu to provide urgent humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to the neighbouring country.
Under the operation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted 21 tonnes of relief materials — including food, hygiene kits, and essential supplies — along with over 80 personnel and rescue equipment to assist affected communities. Earlier consignments delivered by Indian naval ships INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri included dry and fresh rations, toiletries and other survival essentials.
The relief efforts follow reports that thousands of Sri Lankan families were affected — with widespread destruction of homes, displacement, and disruption to vital services across multiple districts. Leaders in New Delhi reaffirmed their solidarity, stating that India remains “fully committed” to supporting recovery efforts, and stands ready to extend further aid as needed.
As search, rescue and rehabilitation efforts continue, this assistance aims to deliver immediate relief and reinforce regional solidarity in a time of crisis.
