The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent weather advisory after a deep depression near Sri Lanka intensified on Friday, raising concerns about the formation of a cyclonic system in the coming days. The disturbance, currently located over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving north-westward and is expected to bring widespread rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent sea conditions to the coastal regions of southern India.

According to IMD officials, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and southern Andhra Pradesh will be the first to experience the impact of the system. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea due to the likelihood of rough waves and high-speed winds reaching 50–60 km/h, with gusts potentially stronger as the system intensifies. Coastal districts such as Chennai, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Puducherry, Thiruvananthapuram, and Karaikal are on high alert.

The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, which may lead to waterlogging, flash floods, and localised disruptions in transport and power supply. Disaster management teams in the affected states have been instructed to remain on standby as the system continues to strengthen.

While the IMD has not yet declared the system a cyclone, meteorologists say that atmospheric conditions are favourable for further intensification, and updates will be issued frequently over the next 24 hours.

Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay indoors, follow official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel as the weather situation evolves.
