The Hyderabad Traffic Police have issued a strong appeal to parents and guardians not to allow minors to drive motor vehicles, warning that strict legal action will continue against those who violate the law. The advisory comes after the number of cases involving underage drivers in the city crossed 2,500, highlighting a growing road safety concern.
According to traffic police officials, many of the violations involve teenagers riding motorcycles and scooters or driving cars without valid driving licences. Authorities noted that several of these incidents have resulted in traffic accidents, injuries, and damage to property, placing both the minors and other road users at significant risk. The police stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and that parents play a crucial role in preventing such violations.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, a person must meet the prescribed minimum age and hold a valid driving licence to operate a motor vehicle on public roads. When a minor is found driving, legal action can extend beyond the child to include the parent or guardian and, in some cases, the owner of the vehicle. Authorities said they will continue enforcing these provisions to discourage underage driving and improve road safety.
Traffic police have intensified enforcement across Hyderabad by conducting regular vehicle checks near schools, colleges, residential neighbourhoods, and busy intersections. Surveillance cameras and patrol teams are also being used to identify traffic violations involving minors. Officials said enforcement drives will continue throughout the city, with repeat offenders facing stricter action.
Police have also urged educational institutions and resident welfare associations to support awareness campaigns on responsible driving and road safety. Officials emphasized that educating young people about traffic rules before they become eligible for a driving licence is essential to reducing accidents and promoting safer roads.
