A recent health report has revealed a serious public health concern in Hyderabad. According to the Health of the Nation (HoN) Report 2026 by Apollo Hospitals, the city’s obesity rate has surged to over 81%, making it one of the highest in India. This marks a sharp increase of around 18% compared to the previous year.
The findings are based on screenings of nearly 37.5 lakh people, showing that a large portion of the population is either overweight or obese. Experts say this rise is mainly due to sedentary lifestyles, increased consumption of junk and processed foods, stress eating, and lack of physical activity. Additionally, excessive screen time—especially late-night smartphone usage—has disrupted sleep patterns, contributing to weight gain and metabolic issues.
Doctors have expressed concern because Hyderabad is already known as a diabetes hotspot, and rising obesity levels could worsen health outcomes. Childhood obesity is also increasing, which raises long-term health risks for future generations. The misuse of steroids and unhealthy dieting trends have further aggravated the situation.
Health professionals are urging people to adopt healthier lifestyles, including balanced diets, regular exercise, and reduced intake of processed foods. They also stress the importance of proper sleep and limiting screen time. Public awareness campaigns and early interventions are considered essential to prevent a larger health crisis.
Overall, this report highlights a growing urban health issue that requires immediate attention from both individuals and authorities.
