Hyderabad has been identified as a major hotspot for synthetic drug production and trafficking in India, according to findings presented at a national narcotics coordination meeting. Authorities say several illegal networks operating in and around the city have been involved in manufacturing and distributing dangerous narcotics.
The report revealed that pharmaceutical and chemical facilities near Hyderabad were being misused to produce synthetic drugs such as tramadol, fentanyl, methamphetamine, MDMA, and mephedrone. These drugs were reportedly distributed not only within India but also exported to countries including the United States and Poland.
Law enforcement agencies have been actively working to dismantle these illegal operations. Since 2024, multiple raids have been conducted, leading to the seizure of large quantities of precursor chemicals and narcotic substances. Investigators discovered that criminal networks were using shell companies and legitimate-looking chemical factories to obtain the materials required to manufacture drugs.
One of the major seizures involved hundreds of kilograms of ephedrine found in industrial areas near Hyderabad. Authorities believe that such chemicals were being processed into synthetic drugs before being transported through various smuggling channels.
Officials also noted a worrying shift in drug consumption patterns in the city. Synthetic drugs, which are often more potent and dangerous than traditional narcotics, are becoming increasingly popular among some users. This trend has raised concerns about public health and law enforcement challenges.
To address the issue, authorities are strengthening surveillance of pharmaceutical industries and chemical suppliers. Coordination between state and central agencies has also been increased to track suspicious transactions and shipments of precursor chemicals.
Experts say Hyderabad’s growing industrial sector and global connectivity make it vulnerable to such criminal activities. However, officials remain confident that strict monitoring and continued enforcement efforts will help curb the spread of synthetic drug networks in the region.
