With the monsoon season approaching, authorities in Hyderabad have accelerated flood management and drainage improvement projects to prevent urban flooding. The city, which has experienced severe waterlogging in past monsoons, is now focusing on strengthening its stormwater infrastructure.
Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have confirmed that desilting of major drains and nalas is being carried out on a war footing. Special teams have been deployed to clear blockages, remove encroachments, and ensure smooth water flow across critical areas.
Low-lying regions such as LB Nagar, Kukatpally, and parts of the Old City are being given priority, as they are more vulnerable to flooding. Authorities are also installing additional pumps and upgrading drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall more effectively.
In addition to infrastructure work, the civic body is using technology to monitor rainfall and water levels in real time. Early warning systems and control rooms are being set up to respond quickly to any emergencies during the monsoon season.
Residents have welcomed these measures but remain cautious, as previous efforts have not always been sufficient to prevent flooding. Many have urged authorities to ensure timely completion of projects and proper maintenance of drainage systems.
Experts emphasize that long-term solutions should include better urban planning, protection of lakes, and strict action against illegal constructions that block natural water channels.
With heavy rains expected in the coming months, the success of these initiatives will be crucial in determining how well Hyderabad can manage flood risks and protect its residents.
