Unexpected pre-monsoon showers lashed several parts of Bengaluru over the weekend, leading to severe waterlogging and widespread traffic disruptions. Key areas including Whitefield, Electronic City, and parts of Outer Ring Road reported flooded streets, slowing down vehicular movement during peak hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rains were triggered by localized weather systems and are likely to continue intermittently over the next few days. Civic authorities, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), deployed emergency teams to clear clogged drains and manage water accumulation.
Commuters faced long delays as major roads became partially submerged, with several vehicles breaking down due to water entering engines. Residents also reported water entering homes in low-lying areas, raising concerns about the city’s drainage infrastructure.
Tech professionals working in IT hubs were particularly affected, with many companies allowing employees to work from home due to travel difficulties. “It took me nearly two hours to travel a distance that usually takes 40 minutes,” said an employee commuting from Marathahalli to Bellandur.
Civic experts have once again highlighted Bengaluru’s long-standing drainage issues, pointing to rapid urbanization and encroachment of stormwater drains as major causes of flooding. Authorities have acknowledged the concerns and stated that long-term solutions, including stormwater drain upgrades, are being planned.
Meanwhile, residents have been advised to avoid waterlogged routes and stay updated on traffic advisories issued by the city police. With more rain predicted, the city remains on alert for further disruptions.
