Bengaluru witnessed intense hailstorms and thundershowers for the second consecutive day, bringing much-needed relief from rising temperatures but also causing widespread disruption across the city. The sudden weather change caught many residents off guard, particularly during peak evening hours.
Several parts of the city, including JP Nagar, Jayanagar, KR Market, and Tumakuru Road, experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The downpour led to waterlogging and traffic congestion in multiple areas, slowing down vehicular movement and affecting daily commuters.
One of the most significant impacts was seen at Kempegowda International Airport, where at least 26 flights were diverted due to adverse weather conditions. Passengers faced delays and inconvenience as authorities worked to manage the situation safely.
The rain also disrupted shopping activity in busy commercial zones such as Commercial Street and Chickpet, especially with the Ugadi festival approaching. Fallen signboards and reduced visibility added to safety concerns for pedestrians and motorists alike.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather pattern is due to a north-south trough combined with high surface temperatures. The department has forecast continued thunderstorms in isolated parts of the city, particularly during evening hours.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during sudden weather changes, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and stay updated with official alerts.
While the rainfall has provided temporary relief from heat, experts warn that such erratic weather patterns could become more frequent due to climate variability. The situation highlights the need for improved urban preparedness to handle sudden climatic shifts in rapidly growing cities like Bengaluru.
