Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has approved the development of a dedicated pickleball court in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in North Chennai, marking a new effort to expand modern sports facilities in the city. The civic body passed a resolution to construct the court at Bhashyam 1st Street in Ward 74 (Zone 6) with an estimated investment of ₹1.52 crore.

The project is part of the GCC’s wider plan to enhance neighbourhood-level sports infrastructure and support rising interest in emerging recreational activities. The proposed facility will include essential amenities such as adequate lighting, seating, and basic support services to encourage community participation, especially among local youth. Officials noted that the initiative aims to increase access to structured and healthy recreational options in North Chennai’s densely populated residential zones.

Pickleball — a fast-growing sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis — has gained popularity in urban areas across India, including Chennai, where several existing and upcoming public courts reflect this trend. GCC representatives say the new court in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar will complement ongoing efforts to spread modern sports amenities throughout the city’s zones and offer more inclusive recreational spaces for residents.
