A major political and legal controversy has gripped Kerala following the arrest of expelled Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in connection with a fresh sexual assault complaint, intensifying public debate over political accountability and justice for survivors.
In the early hours of Sunday, Kerala Police’s Crime Branch took Mamkootathil into custody from a hotel in Palakkad town based on a complaint filed by a woman alleging serious sexual offences. The MLA, who had been dismissed from his political party amid earlier allegations, was remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody after being presented before a magistrate in Pathanamthitta.
This marks the third sexual assault case registered against Mamkootathil, all involving separate complaints of rape and related charges. Police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the latest allegation, which reportedly includes claims of coerced actions and abuse of trust. The complainant, a woman originally from Kerala but living abroad, provided her statement through video conferencing.
The arrest has triggered heated reactions across the state’s political landscape. Kerala Assembly Speaker A. N. Shamseer stated that legal advice would be sought on possibly disqualifying the legislator from the Assembly, citing concerns that continued tenure under such serious allegations could undermine public faith in democratic institutions.
Meanwhile, the woman who filed the initial complaint against Mamkootathil issued an emotional message on social media, expressing relief that action was finally taken and asserting that those who commit wrongdoings “in the dark” cannot evade justice.
Local residents and activists have raised broader questions about political ethics, legal responsibility, and the protection of vulnerable individuals in cases involving influential figures. The evolving controversy continues to dominate public discourse in Kerala as investigations proceed.
