The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strong warning to fishermen along the Kerala coast, advising them not to venture into the sea due to the arrival of the southwest monsoon and the likelihood of rough weather conditions over the Arabian Sea. The advisory comes as Kerala experiences intensified rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent sea conditions following the official onset of the monsoon.
According to weather officials, wind speeds along the Kerala coast are expected to reach between 40 and 60 kmph, with occasional gusts exceeding these levels in some areas. The combination of strong winds, high waves, and rough seas has significantly increased the risk for fishing vessels operating in coastal and deep-sea waters.
The IMD has indicated that adverse weather conditions are likely to persist over the next few days as the monsoon system strengthens. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough, making fishing operations unsafe. Fishermen currently at sea have been advised to return to shore at the earliest opportunity, while harbor authorities have been instructed to monitor vessel movements closely.
District administrations across coastal regions, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, have intensified awareness campaigns to ensure that fishing communities receive timely updates. Coastal police, fisheries officials, and disaster management teams are coordinating efforts to disseminate weather advisories and emergency information.
Authorities have also warned residents living in coastal areas about the possibility of high waves, coastal erosion, and localized flooding, particularly during periods of high tide. Tourism operators involved in boating, water sports, and recreational marine activities have been advised to exercise caution and follow safety regulations.
The Fisheries Department has urged fishermen to regularly monitor official weather bulletins and avoid relying on unofficial information sources. Emergency response teams remain on standby to respond to any maritime incidents that may occur during the adverse weather period.
Experts note that such precautions are essential during the early stages of the southwest monsoon, when weather conditions can change rapidly. Officials have emphasized that safeguarding lives remains the highest priority and urged fishing communities to strictly comply with the advisory until sea conditions improve.
With the monsoon expected to strengthen further in the coming days, authorities continue to closely monitor weather developments and issue timely updates to ensure the safety of Kerala’s coastal population.
