In a symbolic push to reset relations ten years after the 2016 Brexit referendum, the European Union and the United Kingdom are embarking on renewed talks aimed at deepening cooperation on defence, trade, and broader geopolitical challenges. Officials from both sides say the initiative reflects a recognition that shared strategic interests — from economic stability to security threats posed by Russia’s war in Ukraine and global geopolitical shifts — require closer coordination than in the immediate post-Brexit years.

At the first major EU-UK summit in London in May 2025, leaders agreed a Security and Defence Partnership and laid the groundwork for future collaboration outside the framework of EU membership, including structured dialogues on security issues and possible UK participation in joint defence initiatives. Trade talks are also being advanced, building on the existing EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, with discussions on reducing barriers and exploring deeper economic ties in areas such as energy markets, youth mobility, and regulatory cooperation.

Political leaders on both sides have emphasized that the renewed engagement does not reverse Brexit but aims to shape a pragmatic partnership suited to current global challenges, aligning on defence, economic interests, and geopolitical cooperation.
