Marking World Cancer Day, Ernakulam General Hospital on Tuesday launched a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive aimed at preventing cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. The initiative is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about cancer prevention and promote early intervention through immunisation.
The vaccination drive, inaugurated by hospital authorities in the presence of health officials and medical staff, is primarily targeted at adolescent girls and young women, the most vulnerable group for HPV-related cancers. Doctors at the hospital highlighted that HPV vaccination is a proven and effective measure to significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in India.
Speaking at the launch, senior health officials emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare. “Cervical cancer is largely preventable with timely vaccination and regular screening. Through this drive, we hope to educate the public and encourage eligible beneficiaries to come forward for vaccination,” a senior doctor said.
As part of the programme, awareness sessions were also organised to inform parents and students about the safety, efficacy, and recommended age for HPV vaccination. Informational materials on cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices were distributed to patients and visitors at the hospital.
Hospital authorities said the vaccination drive would continue over the coming days, with doses being administered at designated counters within the hospital premises. They also urged schools, community organisations, and parents to actively support the initiative to ensure wider coverage.
World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, aims to unite people across the globe in the fight against cancer by promoting awareness, prevention, and action. The HPV vaccination drive at Ernakulam General Hospital stands as a significant step toward reducing the long-term burden of cervical cancer in the district.
