Health authorities in Ernakulam district have launched a large-scale dengue awareness and prevention campaign following a noticeable rise in reported cases across several localities. The initiative aims to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease before the monsoon season intensifies.
District health officials confirmed that surveillance teams have identified clusters of dengue cases in both urban and semi-urban areas. In response, the Health Department has deployed field workers to conduct door-to-door inspections, eliminate stagnant water sources, and distribute informational pamphlets highlighting preventive measures.
Special focus is being given to controlling the breeding of the Aedes mosquito, which transmits dengue. Authorities are urging residents to remove standing water from containers such as flower pots, discarded tyres, buckets, and rooftop tanks. Fogging operations and larvicide treatments have also been intensified in high-risk zones.
Public awareness sessions are being organised in schools, residential colonies, and marketplaces to educate citizens about early symptoms, including high fever, joint pain, severe headaches, and skin rashes. Health officials have advised individuals experiencing symptoms to seek immediate medical attention rather than resorting to self-medication.
Hospitals and primary health centres in the district have been directed to remain alert and ensure adequate availability of testing kits and treatment facilities. Officials stated that early detection and timely medical care are crucial in preventing severe complications.
The district administration has also appealed to local self-government bodies to strengthen sanitation efforts and ensure proper waste disposal. Authorities emphasised that community participation is essential to successfully contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of dengue in Ernakulam.
Residents have been encouraged to stay informed through official health bulletins and cooperate with inspection teams to safeguard public health.
