The civic administration in Ernakulam district has initiated a large-scale drive to remove roadside encroachments across key stretches in Kochi, aiming to ease traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety.

The campaign targets unauthorized extensions of shops, temporary structures, illegally parked vehicles, and construction debris occupying public roads and footpaths. Officials stated that these encroachments have significantly narrowed carriageways, contributing to bottlenecks during peak hours and posing safety risks to both motorists and pedestrians.

Municipal teams, supported by police personnel, began inspections early this week in high-traffic zones including commercial hubs and major junctions. Encroaching structures were dismantled, and notices were issued to repeat offenders. Authorities emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader urban mobility plan designed to improve traffic flow, ensure accessible sidewalks, and create safer public spaces.

Civic officials explained that the drive follows multiple complaints from residents and commuters regarding blocked walkways and hazardous road conditions. The administration has also warned that strict penalties will be imposed on individuals and establishments that fail to comply with regulations.

Alongside enforcement measures, the civic body plans to introduce better parking management systems and clearer demarcation of vending zones to balance livelihood concerns with urban planning needs. Officials noted that street vendors operating within designated areas would not be affected, but unauthorized occupation of public pathways would not be tolerated.

Local residents largely welcomed the move, expressing hope that sustained enforcement would bring long-term improvements rather than temporary relief. Business owners, however, have requested phased implementation to minimize disruption to trade activities.

Authorities have assured that the encroachment removal drive will continue in phases across different parts of the district, reinforcing the administration’s focus on modernizing Kochi’s urban infrastructure and improving overall mobility.
