Authorities in Bengaluru have announced a strict crackdown on plastic use and improper waste management, introducing heavy fines for violations.
The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has intensified enforcement, particularly targeting events like weddings and large gatherings, where single-use plastics are widely used.
Under the new rules, fines start at ₹3,500 for plastic use and can go up to ₹5 lakh for repeat violations. Households and bulk waste generators are also being monitored, with penalties imposed for failing to segregate waste properly.
Dumping garbage in open areas or vacant plots can attract fines ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000. Authorities have also introduced surprise inspections to ensure compliance.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to address Bengaluru’s growing waste problem. Rapid urbanization has led to increased garbage generation, putting pressure on landfills and the environment.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move but stress that enforcement alone is not enough. Public awareness and behavioral change are equally important for long-term success.
This crackdown reflects a stronger commitment by the city to tackle pollution and promote sustainable practices. If implemented effectively, it could significantly improve cleanliness and environmental health in Bengaluru.
