Early results from Bangladesh’s 13th general election indicate a strong lead for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), signaling a potential major victory and a return to power after years in opposition. Unofficial tallies from national media show the BNP securing a majority of parliamentary seats, surpassing the simple majority threshold required to form government as vote counting continued on Friday.

According to preliminary figures, the BNP — led by chairman Tarique Rahman — has won a significant number of seats out of the 299-member Jatiya Sangsad, positioning it to govern without needing coalition partners. The party’s projected dominance follows the collapse of the long-ruling Awami League government in 2024 after widespread protests and political upheaval, with this election marking the first national poll since then.

Reports also highlight notable victories by BNP candidates in key constituencies, with the party’s success drawing congratulations from regional leaders and signaling hopes for political stability and economic reforms in the South Asian nation. National and international observers say the election appears to reflect strong public support for change, though official results are still awaited from the Election Commission.
