Police in Hyderabad have intensified their fight against cybercrime, resulting in the arrest of 117 suspects from 16 different states as part of a large-scale investigation known as “Operation Octopus.” Authorities revealed that the suspects were linked to a nationwide network responsible for more than 1,000 cybercrime cases across India.
According to police officials, the suspects were involved in multiple types of digital fraud, including fake investment schemes, OTP scams, digital arrest scams, and social media fraud. Investigators traced suspicious financial transactions totaling approximately ₹139 crore through several bank accounts associated with the accused.
During the operation, law enforcement officers seized ₹36 lakh in cash along with electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, SIM cards, and bank documents used in the cybercrime activities. Authorities also discovered evidence suggesting the existence of shell companies that were allegedly created to move illegal funds and hide fraudulent transactions.
Police officials stated that 2,963 complaints were filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which led to 461 FIRs and several additional arrests during the investigation. Efforts also focused on monitoring suspicious online activity. Authorities identified 124 social media accounts promoting illegal online betting platforms targeting Indian users and ensured that they were taken down.
Officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant while engaging in online financial activities. Residents are advised to avoid sharing OTPs, clicking on suspicious links, or investing in unverified online schemes.
The police department reiterated that cybercrime is evolving rapidly and that cooperation from the public is essential in preventing financial fraud and protecting citizens from digital threats.
