In a significant effort to strengthen Kerala’s creative economy, the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has formally partnered with Kerala Kalamandalam, the state’s renowned arts university, to establish a creative incubator centre on the Kalamandalam campus at Cheruthuruthi in Thrissur district. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the initiative was signed on January 21, 2026, by KSUM CEO Anoop Ambika and Vice-Chancellor B. Ananthakrishnan, with senior government officials present at the ceremony.

The collaborative incubator aims to bridge the worlds of art, culture, technology, and entrepreneurship, offering a supportive ecosystem for artists, students and creative startups to transform artistic ideas into sustainable ventures. It will provide mentorship, capacity-building programmes, residencies, exhibitions, training, and access to KSUM’s wider network of tech and business support services.

KSUM has long been expanding its focus beyond technology alone to nurture inclusive innovation ecosystems that integrate non-conventional sectors such as the arts. The new incubator will help emerging creative entrepreneurs use digital tools and innovative business models to scale their work regionally and beyond. It also aims to position Kerala as a leading hub for creative entrepreneurship in India, encouraging the fusion of traditional cultural practices with contemporary enterprise opportunities.

Officials said the initiative supports broader goals of the Kerala government’s startup strategy by encouraging cross-sector collaboration and creating pathways for artists and creative professionals to enter the global marketplace. By combining Kalamandalam’s deep cultural legacy with KSUM’s startup-oriented resources, the incubator is expected to offer a “culture-meets-innovation” environment that fosters both artistic excellence and commercial viability.

The partnership highlights the increasing recognition of the creative industries as a significant contributor to economic growth and employment, particularly for young innovators exploring synergies between art, technology and entrepreneurship.
