Rising ocean temperatures linked to climate change are significantly altering the migration patterns of sea turtles, raising new concerns among marine scientists and conservationists. These ancient marine reptiles rely on stable ocean conditions and seasonal temperature cues to navigate thousands of kilometres between feeding grounds and nesting beaches.
Recent research shows that warming seas are shifting ocean currents and changing the distribution of food sources such as jellyfish and seagrass. As a result, species like the Loggerhead Sea Turtle and the Green Sea Turtle are adjusting their traditional migration routes and timing. In some regions, turtles are arriving earlier or later at nesting beaches, while others are travelling to entirely new feeding areas.
Scientists warn that these changes can disrupt the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Sea turtles play an important ecological role by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reef habitats. Altered migration routes may also expose turtles to new threats, including increased fishing activity, marine pollution, and ship traffic.
Another concern is the effect of rising sand temperatures on turtle nesting sites. Sea turtle hatchlings’ sex is determined by the temperature of the sand during incubation, and warmer beaches are producing disproportionately more females. This imbalance could threaten the long-term survival of turtle populations if the trend continues.
Conservationists stress that protecting nesting beaches, reducing marine pollution, and addressing climate change are essential to safeguard sea turtles. Strengthening international conservation efforts is particularly important because sea turtles migrate across multiple national waters during their life cycles.
Researchers say continued monitoring of migration routes using satellite tracking and ocean data will be crucial to understanding how sea turtles adapt to rapidly changing ocean conditions. News as reported
