Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan officially launched the construction of a major tunnel road project that will connect Kozhikode and Wayanad. The project, known as the Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi Tunnel Road Project, is considered one of the most significant infrastructure developments currently planned in the state.

The Chief Minister conducted the first rock blasting ceremony, marking the beginning of the construction work. The project is estimated to cost around ₹2,134 crore and aims to improve connectivity between the hilly district of Wayanad and the coastal region of Kozhikode.

Once completed, the project will feature twin tunnels stretching about 8.7 kilometers, which will significantly reduce travel time between the two districts. Currently, travelers must pass through the Thamarassery Ghat road, a winding mountain route that often experiences heavy traffic and weather-related difficulties. The new tunnel road will provide a faster and safer alternative for commuters, tourists, and transport vehicles.

Officials say the project will also help boost tourism and economic activities in the region. Wayanad is one of Kerala’s most popular hill destinations, attracting visitors from across India. Improved connectivity is expected to increase tourist arrivals and support local businesses.

The government has also emphasized that the project will follow environmental guidelines to minimize ecological impact in the Western Ghats region. Authorities believe the tunnel road will become a key infrastructure link that supports regional development while improving transportation safety and efficiency.

Construction work is expected to progress in phases, with authorities aiming to complete the project within the planned timeline once major excavation activities begin.
