Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has once again urged society to resist the spread of superstition and unscientific beliefs, highlighting the importance of scientific temper and rational thinking in today’s world. Speaking at the 38th Kerala Science Congress held in Kochi, the CM warned that attempts to present myths and blind beliefs as scientific facts are dangerous for the intellectual growth of the community and could undermine efforts to build a knowledge-driven society.
In his keynote address, Vijayan emphasized that glorifying superstition under the guise of ancient science threatens the very foundation of evidence-based reasoning and public understanding of real scientific achievements. He pointed out that society must actively expose narratives that portray mythological claims as historical scientific discoveries, stressing that this is essential to preserve scientific integrity and the progress of future generations.
The Chief Minister highlighted the role of forums like the Science Congress in fostering meaningful discussions rooted in research and verified knowledge, saying that awareness of technological advancements alone is insufficient without a clear understanding of how science evolved and transformed human life.
During the event, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan praised Kerala’s contributions to national scientific and technological progress, noting milestones such as the establishment of the first Technopark and the state’s role in early space initiatives. The function also included the presentation of the 2024 Kerala Science Awards, where renowned scientist Dr. Tessy Thomas and other researchers were recognized for their work in science, literature and media.
Vijayan’s message comes amid broader national conversations about the balance between tradition and scientific inquiry. By advocating for rational education and evidence-based discourse, he reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening scientific thought and humanism across Kerala’s education and cultural landscape.
