CHENNAI, India — Chennai is gearing up to welcome its first supertree tower, a 30-metre, eight-storey landmark rising within Kalaignar Centenary Park that is nearing completion and slated to open to the public in the coming weeks. The structure, inspired by Singapore’s famed Supertree Grove, will feature two panoramic viewing decks — a glass gallery and an open terrace — that offer sweeping views of the city skyline and the Bay of Bengal.
Designed with vertical greenery wrapping its concrete and steel trunk and radiating steel branches extending outward, the tower will be illuminated with a light-and-sound show after sunset. On the seventh level, a café will provide visitors a place to relax, though officials said its opening will follow shortly after the main launch.
The addition is expected to enhance the park’s appeal, boosting tourism and local footfall. Kalaignar Centenary Park, developed on reclaimed land and opened in 2024, already attracts hundreds of visitors daily for recreation and wellness. City leaders say the supertree is intended as an iconic attraction that blends urban design with green spaces, reflecting Chennai’s growing emphasis on public amenities. Residents have welcomed the development, even as some raise concerns about parking and traffic management near Cathedral Road once crowds arrive.
