The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled a major urban redevelopment initiative to transform the spaces beneath 10 flyovers into clean, functional public areas. The project aims to reclaim locations that have long been used as dumping grounds, unauthorized vending zones, and informal parking spaces, converting them into attractive community spaces.
Under the plan, the flyover underbellies will be redesigned with landscaped parks, walking tracks, organized parking facilities, seating areas, improved lighting, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Civic officials say the redevelopment will not only improve the city’s appearance but also provide safer and more accessible public spaces for residents.
The project forms part of Chennai’s broader urban beautification and sustainability efforts. By making productive use of previously neglected spaces, the corporation hopes to reduce illegal dumping, discourage encroachments, and enhance environmental quality while creating recreational areas in densely populated neighborhoods.
Work on the redevelopment is expected to begin in phases, with the GCC’s Special Projects Wing overseeing execution. Officials believe the initiative will serve as a model for future urban renewal projects across Chennai, improving both the city’s infrastructure and the quality of life for its residents.
