Suburban train services in Chennai are witnessing a sharp rise in passenger demand, prompting railway authorities to review schedules and introduce additional services during peak hours.
Recent operational changes and infrastructure works led to a temporary reduction in train frequency, significantly affecting daily commuters. The number of suburban services reportedly dropped, causing overcrowding and inconvenience for lakhs of passengers, including office-goers and students.
To address the surge in demand, Southern Railway has begun introducing additional fast local trains on high-traffic routes such as the Chennai Beach–Tambaram corridor. Around 20 extra fast services are being deployed during peak hours to ease congestion and improve travel times.
Authorities are also coordinating with city transport systems to manage the commuter load. Additional bus services have been deployed along key suburban corridors to support passengers during periods of reduced train availability and heavy crowding.
Meanwhile, new infrastructure developments—like the recently opened MRTS extension connecting key suburban hubs—are expected to improve long-term connectivity and reduce pressure on existing routes. However, officials acknowledge that more frequent services and better scheduling are essential to meet growing urban mobility needs.
