Chennai-based deeptech aerospace startup The ePlane Company has officially begun work on building India’s first electric air taxi, the three-seat e200x, aiming to redefine urban mobility in the country. The announcement came during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where ePlane confirmed it is leveraging advanced technologies from NVIDIA to accelerate development and simulation of the aircraft.
Instead of relying solely on physical prototypes, engineers are creating a high-fidelity “digital twin” of the e200x using the NVIDIA Omniverse platform. This virtual replica enables comprehensive testing of flight physics, autonomy systems, sensor fusion and edge-case scenarios—such as extreme weather or system failures—that are difficult and costly to replicate in real life. Integrated with NVIDIA’s IGX onboard computing platform, the system is designed to support critical avionics functions and advanced situational awareness during flight.
The project, incubated at IIT Madras and developed at ePlane’s 60,000 sq ft Chennai manufacturing facility, marks a significant step in India’s pursuit of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for future urban air mobility. With simulation guiding much of the testing, ePlane is pushing towards certification and eventual deployment in major cities. News as reported
