Chennai is witnessing a sharp rise in traffic congestion across several key roads, prompting city authorities to review traffic signal timings and improve road management strategies. Commuters in busy corridors such as Velachery–Tambaram Road and other major junctions have reported longer travel times and frequent bottlenecks during peak hours.
Traffic officials say malfunctioning signals and increasing vehicle numbers have worsened the situation. Some stretches now handle more than 5,000 vehicles per hour, leading to heavy congestion and safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians alike. Authorities have acknowledged the issue and have promised inspections and repairs of faulty signals to restore smoother traffic flow.
