The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has intensified dengue prevention measures across the city as authorities prepare for the upcoming summer season and potential rise in mosquito-borne diseases. Health officials have stepped up vector-control activities, including fogging operations, larvicide spraying, and door-to-door inspections in residential neighbourhoods.
Civic authorities said teams have been deployed across multiple zones to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites such as stagnant water in drains, construction areas, water storage containers, and unused tyres. Workers are also conducting awareness campaigns to educate residents about preventing mosquito breeding in and around their homes.
According to health officials, hundreds of field workers are involved in the prevention drive, inspecting water tanks, clearing garbage, and spraying insecticides in stormwater drains and public spaces. The corporation has also introduced technological measures, including the use of drones to spray larvicides over large water bodies and difficult-to-reach locations.
The intensified campaign comes amid concerns about mosquito-borne diseases in the city. Health experts note that dengue-spreading Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean stagnant water often found in household containers and construction sites. Authorities have urged residents to regularly clean their surroundings, cover water storage tanks, and dispose of unused containers that could collect rainwater.
Officials say the preventive measures are aimed at controlling mosquito density before the peak season for dengue, which usually occurs during and after the monsoon months. By strengthening surveillance and community participation, the civic body hopes to reduce the risk of dengue outbreaks and protect public health in Chennai.News as Reported.
