The Central Government has extended the deadline for the ongoing Chennai International Airport modernisation project to December 2026, giving authorities additional time to complete one of the city’s largest aviation infrastructure upgrades.
According to officials, the project faced repeated delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, severe cyclones, and periods of unusually heavy rainfall, all of which affected construction schedules and material supply. Despite the setbacks, work on the new passenger facilities and terminal improvements is progressing steadily.
Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to offer increased passenger handling capacity, modern check-in and security systems, improved baggage handling, expanded waiting areas, and better overall travel experience for domestic and international passengers. The project is also aimed at strengthening Chennai’s position as one of South India’s leading aviation hubs.
Airport authorities have assured travellers that construction activities will continue in phases to minimize disruption to daily flight operations while ensuring safety and operational efficiency throughout the remaining work.
