Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has embarked on a four-day official visit to Beijing, marking the first trip by a Canadian leader to China in nearly a decade and aimed at rebuilding diplomatic and economic ties strained by years of trade disputes and political disagreements.

Carney — accompanied by senior cabinet ministers — landed in Beijing Wednesday, where he was welcomed with ceremonial honors and will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to discuss strategies for easing tariff conflicts, expanding trade, and enhancing cooperation in areas such as energy, agriculture and international security.

Relations between Ottawa and Beijing deteriorated after Canada’s 2018 arrest of a Chinese tech executive and subsequent tariff tit-for-tat measures affecting sectors from electric vehicles to canola exports. Canada has also faced pressure to diversify trade beyond its traditional reliance on the United States.

Business leaders have welcomed Carney’s visit as a positive signal to markets on both sides, and analysts say the trip reflects Ottawa’s desire to reset and broaden its diplomatic engagement in a complex global landscape.news as reported.
