The Canadian government has officially introduced new passport fees starting March 31, 2026, raising the cost of travel documents and placing Canada among the countries with the most expensive passports in the world.
Under the updated pricing, the fee for a 10-year adult Canadian passport issued inside the country has increased from CAD $160 to CAD $163.50, while a 5-year adult passport now costs CAD $122.50, up from $120. Children’s passports have also risen slightly to CAD $58.50.
Although the increase is relatively small, the adjustment has pushed Canada into the top 10 most expensive passport fees globally, surpassing the cost of passports in countries such as Germany and France. However, it still remains cheaper than some of the highest-priced passports issued by nations like the United States and Australia.
Officials say the price change reflects inflation and rising service-delivery costs related to producing secure biometric passports and maintaining passport services. The adjustment also follows Canada’s Service Fees Act, which allows government service fees to be updated annually in line with inflation.
In addition to the fee increase, the government announced a new service guarantee beginning in April 2026. If a complete passport application is not processed within 30 business days, applicants may receive the passport free of charge as a refund of the fee.News as Reported.
