The Kerala government has announced a major expansion of its flagship ‘Work Near Home’ initiative, with plans to scale the project up to 200 centres across the state, as part of a broader set of IT- and youth-focused measures unveiled in the State Budget. The move is expected to significantly benefit Kochi’s IT ecosystem while creating new employment opportunities closer to home for thousands of young professionals.
The ‘Work Near Home’ project, launched to reduce migration and urban congestion, enables professionals to work from decentralised IT workspaces located near their hometowns. With the new budgetary support, the government aims to expand the network from its current footprint to 200 fully equipped centres, offering high-speed connectivity, shared office infrastructure, and access to government-supported digital services. Kochi, as a major IT hub anchored by Infopark, is expected to play a central role in mentoring and supporting these satellite centres.
In addition to the workspace expansion, the budget outlines several technology-driven youth initiatives designed to strengthen Kerala’s talent pipeline. These include enhanced skill development programmes in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies, aligned with industry needs. Officials said the initiatives would improve employability among graduates while supporting IT companies facing talent shortages.
The government also emphasised support for startups and freelancers, with incentives for innovation, incubation, and remote work models. By encouraging professionals to work closer to home, policymakers hope to reduce pressure on major cities, lower living costs for employees, and promote balanced regional development.
Industry stakeholders in Kochi welcomed the announcement, noting that decentralised workspaces could help companies tap into talent from smaller towns without requiring relocation. However, some experts cautioned that sustained success would depend on consistent infrastructure quality, reliable connectivity, and private sector participation.
With the expanded ‘Work Near Home’ project and allied youth initiatives, the budget signals Kerala’s intent to combine technology, employment, and regional inclusion—positioning Kochi as a catalyst in the state’s evolving digital economy.
