The Karnataka Government has directed officials to complete the long-pending Wind Tunnel Junction underpass on Old Airport Road within the next three months, in a renewed effort to ease traffic congestion in one of Bengaluru’s busiest corridors. The directive was issued during an inspection of the project site by Bengaluru Development Minister, who stressed that there should be no further delays in executing the crucial infrastructure project.
The underpass is being constructed at the busy Wind Tunnel Road–Old Airport Road junction near the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre in east Bengaluru. Once completed, the six-lane, 300-metre underpass will provide uninterrupted traffic movement between HAL, Marathahalli, Whitefield, and the city centre, reducing waiting time at one of the city’s most congested intersections. The project is estimated to cost around ₹19 crore.
During the site visit, officials were instructed to deploy additional manpower, modern construction equipment, and work in multiple shifts to ensure the project is completed within the revised deadline. The minister also directed agencies such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), BESCOM, and telecom operators to immediately relocate underground pipelines, sewer lines, power cables, and optical fibre networks that have slowed construction.
The underpass project has faced repeated delays over the past three years due to administrative approvals, utility relocation, traffic management challenges, and changes in construction methodology. Work finally resumed earlier this year after traffic diversions were put in place and necessary clearances were obtained. Temporary service roads have also been created to minimize disruption to commuters while construction continues.
Officials believe the project will play a key role in creating a signal-free corridor along Old Airport Road, significantly improving travel between central Bengaluru and the city’s eastern IT hubs. With nearly 70% of the work already completed, authorities are optimistic that the remaining construction can be finished within the stipulated timeframe if all supporting agencies adhere to the schedule.
The Bengaluru Development Department has reiterated that improving road infrastructure remains a priority to address the city’s growing traffic congestion. Once operational, the Wind Tunnel Junction underpass is expected to enhance commuter convenience, reduce travel delays, and improve connectivity for thousands of motorists who use the corridor every day.
