In a significant move to address mounting unpaid water bills, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has introduced a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme aimed at helping consumers clear long-pending dues. The initiative, announced by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, will remain in effect from April to June 2026.
Officials revealed that out of nearly 11 lakh water connections in the city, over 5.1 lakh have outstanding dues amounting to approximately ₹851 crore. This includes ₹539 crore in principal and ₹312 crore in accumulated interest. The scheme is designed to provide financial relief by waiving a portion of the interest if consumers pay the principal amount within the stipulated period.
Under the scheme, consumers will receive detailed notices outlining their pending dues, the amount of interest waived, and the final payable sum. Payment options will be made available through both online and offline platforms to ensure accessibility for all users.
Authorities believe the initiative will not only ease the financial burden on residents but also improve the revenue flow for BWSSB. The move comes at a crucial time when water demand is rising due to the approaching summer season.
Civic experts have welcomed the decision, stating that it strikes a balance between enforcing payment discipline and supporting citizens facing financial constraints. However, some have emphasized the need for long-term reforms to prevent recurring arrears.
The BWSSB has urged residents to take advantage of the limited-time offer, warning that stricter recovery measures may follow once the scheme concludes.
